If you are staying in Dong Van, you do not need to travel far to discover one of the town's most charming places. Dong Van Ancient Town sits right in the heart of the town, surrounded by the dramatic mountains of the Dong Van Karst Plateau.

The first thing you may notice is how different the atmosphere feels from a modern city. Old houses stand close together around the small central area, while traditional tiled roofs, earthen walls and stone details give the quarter a distinctive mountain character.

The ancient quarter is nearly one kilometre long and includes around 40 traditional houses dating from the early 20th century. The architecture reflects the cultural influences of communities including the H'Mong, Tay and Hoa people.

What to do in Dong Van Ancient Town

Take a slow walk

The best way to experience the old quarter is simply to walk. There is no need to rush from one attraction to another. Wander through the small streets, look at the old houses and notice the details of everyday life.

Early morning is particularly peaceful. You may see local residents opening their shops, preparing breakfast or heading to work while the surrounding mountains slowly emerge from the morning mist.

Enjoy Vietnamese coffee

Find a small café, order a Vietnamese coffee and sit outside for a while. This is one of those simple travel experiences that can become a favourite memory.

After spending the day riding through the mountains, there is something especially relaxing about sitting in a quiet corner of Dong Van with a hot coffee in your hands.

Visit Dong Van Market

If you are in town on a market day, make time to visit the local market. For people living in the surrounding mountains, the market is much more than a place to buy and sell goods. It is also a social meeting place where communities come together.

You may see colourful traditional clothing, local produce, livestock, handmade products and regional food. The atmosphere can be especially lively on market days, when people travel down from surrounding villages.

Try local food

The old quarter is also a good place to discover some of the flavours of northern Vietnam. Depending on the season and what is available, look out for local specialities such as thang co, grilled dishes, buckwheat products and corn wine.

If you are not sure what to order, simply ask a local or your hotel team for a recommendation.

When should you visit?

Morning: Best for a quieter atmosphere and local market life.

Late afternoon: Pleasant for walking and photography.

Evening: A good time for dinner, coffee and enjoying the atmosphere of the old quarter.

On certain lunar-calendar evenings, the ancient quarter may also host cultural activities, traditional performances and displays of local handicrafts.
